Returning home

Sometimes the things that one has too do after returning, one wonders if its really worth going away. Unpacked this morning, it was quite late when we got home and ended up doing the washing, three loads as it was nice and sunny, supposed to be showers tomorrow. Its funny but I really don't like washing on Sundays and hardly ever do it.

After the few days in Melbourne doing very little, we had a fruitful day. Three loads of washing, hung out, dried, folded ready to be put away. Shopped for meat, probably won't need any meat for a couple of months, broke it all up and froze it. Dont think I could fit any more in.

Starting to get things ready for our first trip out in the caravan, I know it will be easier but at first we are starting with a blank canvas.

Phillip Island

We took Rob and Lindsay to lunch at PI, its so close only about 45kms away. Quaint little town but its gets very busy when the bikes come to town. many of the restaurants were shut and only open at weekends.
Mel doesn't like walking on jetties so we took Lindsay out on one, heaps of people fishing, the weather was perfect and thats very unusual to be able to say that about Melbourne. I did wear a cardigan or jumper while there but it was not the bitterly cold or wet like we have experienced many times before.

After our walk we were ready for a feed of fish and chips sitting outside looking out to sea, just great. Nothing like sand sea and sun for the stress levels to go down. I took my camera but didnt take any photos.

Rob mowed the lawn while we were there, he says some weeks its so wet that lawn mower gets bogged but as thee were about five days in a row with no rain, it had dried out enough to cut. He has landscaped the front and there is no lawn to cut there just the back.

5.30am is not my favoured time

Grrrr the alarm goes at 5.07am as we had to leave at 5.30am, (I always like to have 10 or 15 minutes up my sleeve). Had to have the car at the Airport parking by 6.30/6.45am to check in and then they would drive us to the airport, seeing as we had not been there before and the traffic, we wanted to have a fudge factor.

Everything went as planned and we were at the airport with plenty of time, had HJ's for brekkie, an egg and bacon muffin. Slept for a few minutes on the plane but it was noisy as there were people from a company who were travelling and of course they were dotted around the plane and the conversations went between many seats.

We had hired a car from a company in Melbourne and as they were away from the airport, we needed to ring them and get picked up by the time we walked to the pick up area, we only had to wait  a couple of minutes. It was a little car! the insurance was actually more than hiring the car!

Two hours across the city and a stop for lunch and we were pulling into Rob's. We had to check out the deck that he has built on the side of the house. Wow it was impressive, really dont know how he managed to do it on his own (except for a almost 3 year old "helping") Its all finished except the roof and he is waiting for that to be delivered.

Dockets

Warren has a habit of putting his shopping dockets on the table. I was picking up things for the rubbish and noticed one was for fuel and was interested to see how much to fuel the jeep. Reading it I saw that it also had a loaf of bread, we were out of bread so thought wow he remembered to get bread. Later I was going to make some toast as we now had bread. I had to ask him where he put it, usually bread goes straight in the freezer but it wasn't there.

He was a bit non- plussed as apparently he hadn't bought any, feeling like I was talking to a child, I said yes you did, its on the docket. No no no he says, just put diesel in, he looked at the docket and said that definitely he had not bought bread. Today after tennis, he dropped in and told the servo that he didn't buy bread but had been charged for it.

They checked the CC video and saw that he had not in actual fact bought bread and they gave him the money back for it, only $2.70 but wrongly charged, a win win.

43

43 is the title of this blog because it is the number of years that we have been married. OMG! where did the years go? We celebrated by going to an Indian restaurant in a new area close to home.  We havent had Indin food since we lived in China but we will certainly go back there again.

We ordered two dishes a lamb korma and a mango chicken plus a cheese and spinach naan bread and rice, we started with a spring roll each. There was even some left over but not enough to pack and bring home. All for the cost of $40.

We don't always celebrate and we don't usually buy each other gifts but its nice to do something a bit different at times.

I thought I was going nuts

A few months ago I persuaded Warren that it would be better, easier and cheaper to fly to Melbourne rather than drive. Rob will be 40 soon and we are going down to see them. I booked the flights and answered all the questions while Warren wrote the dates on our big calendar.

Had it in the back of my mind when we were going and have reminded people at work that I wont be in next week. I thought that I should get organised as I remembered the day of going and coming back but not the time so yesterday when I had fifteen or twenty minutes to spare, I decided to call up the documents and familiar myself with the time and work out how to get to the and from the airport etc.

Not in travel documents, not a copy on the notice board, not even under stuff on the board. When in doubt, call the expert. "Warren, I should be able to find our travel stuff in downloads shouldn't I?" Yep, I look again and went into a different part of the computer still nothing. Warren is reading my body language and so he come over and offers to look while I go and watch "The Amazing Race" on TV.

He starts asking questions, such as when did you book? I don't know, you were here, it was ages ago. Next, what airline? I don't know, depends who had the better price. What computer did you use? I don't know probably that one. Did you book under your name or mine? I don't know. By then I was starting to wonder did I really book it or did I just look up flights? No, I'm sure I booked and paid it, didn't I?

He cant find anything so I offer to look through bank details and then ring the airline. I am thinking if they still have seats available and how much, after all, I have the time off work and they know we are coming.

I needed to sit down with a clear head by myself and fix it so lunch time was it but I'll just look at my emails first (I know I am a procrastinator)scrolling down my emails, up comes one from Jetstar and says "Vicki, this time next week you will be in Melbourne" another click of the mouse and there is a copy of our itinerary!

That email saved me a couple hours of work and also convinced me that I am not going nuts just yet. Needless to say I printed out two copies just in case.

GPS's

Our first GPS was a Tomtom which we bought about six years ago. It worked well but the holder gradually wore out and then wouldn't stick to the windscreen. Warren ordered another which had to come from the UK, it wasn't the right fit and so couldn't be used.

Last year when we were going to NZ on a fly drive holiday, to hire a GPS with the car was going to cost $12.50 a day or over $150 for the trip. We saw one advertised that had Oz and NZ maps on it for $79, that was a much better deal, cheaper to start with and then we would have the use of it after and it would stick to the front. The new one was a Navman.

The Navman worked well in NZ and on main roads but it wasn't the best on country roads and we found that it couldn't be upgraded. It also doesn't work that well out of the car and Warren was often heard swearing about the Navman.

When we bought the Jeep I told him he could buy a Tomtom GPS for it and that was his birthday present. He was rapt! It worked well last week and even announced the name of the streets where we needed to turn. It was set up with a woman's voice and we preferred Ken the Australian, Warren said he would change it, but no if we went to Ken, then Ken didn't speak the roads so we have the American woman and giggle at the pronunciation of some of the street names.

Sunday we wanted to go to a cafe at Redcliffe so Warren typed in the cafe, it was Soul something and yes The Soul Cafe came up and he tapped that and we set off. Not sure what was wrong with it but she kept telling us to turn left and then go North. We knew the general direction to get there, south and East so we kept ignoring her and ended up having to turn her off. Oh dear it seems as though the Tomtom is Not always right.

Our share of Vitamin D

After yesterday's rain, today was nice and bright and sunny. Warren suggested a drive and we went to the beach. We couldn't find the cafe that I wanted to take him to, I had been there a few weeks ago with some girlfriends but we found a fish and chips shop that we had been to years ago. The shop hadn't changed much but now it is in the middle of high rise apartments looking out over the beach.

We took our wrapped lunch and sat on the steps in the sunshine, the bird got the rest of the chops that we didn't want.

Here is our jeep that we just had to take for a run, we realized that we didn't even have a blanket or anything to sit on so that was rectified once we got home.

Breakfast in bed

I'm not sure that I really like breakfast in bed that much, coffee yes, but breakfast hummm. However, when Warren suggested that he cook me breakfast in bed, I wasn't going to say no was I? Of course not. We were out of bread so he went for a walk to the shops early as his breakfast is an egg on toast and he brought me one of my special drinks, ginger and fresh orange juice in hot water.

As I was still feeling under the weather I ate my breakfast and stayed under the blankets reading a book. Caught up on some sleep finally getting out of bed at mid day. It was a miserable day as it rained on and off all day. We sat and watched football on TV and looked out at the rain.

Fighting off a cold

Last Saturday I woke up with a slight sore throat, Sunday after we got home from footy I went straight to bed and slept for a couple of hours. Monday I felt okay except that my head was a bit "woody" and my voice sounded as though I had a head cold. Tuesday and Wednesday was about the same, early Thursday morning (around 3am) I really felt awful and didnt think that I would be able to go to work. Warren found some cold tablets that we had used in China.

They were called in English Black and White, I could never remember the Chinese words for them so I used to go into a chemist shop and walk around all the shelves until I saw the packet. From memory they were about 12 yuan or just over $2. I must have brought them home in our medicine box. I took one and got some sleep and woke up feeling pretty good.

As I usually get a cough that lingers I also found some Fisherman's Friend lozenges to take with me. Dinner that night was either left overs, pre-packaged meals from the freezer or fish and chips (I was not cooking!) Another early night as the night air had started to get to me and Friday was a better day. Still got a bit of a cough but at least I feel almost 100% and thank goodness, I didn't get the running nose and sneezes that usually accompanies a cold.

A trail run for the Jeep

Of course, Saturday, the first weekend day that we had the Jeep we had to take it out somewhere. We were out of ginger sauce so that was the first port of call, well after we had gone to the shopping centre and Warren got his birthday present, a Tomtom GPS.

It does sound like a truck but once on the main highway, it purrs along nicely. Lot of traffic then we realized that it was a long weekend for Brisbaneites due to the Ekka. It petered out after a while to normal volume of traffic. We had our usual scones, jam and cream with coffee at the Ginger factory. the price is the same $7.50 but I noticed that only one scone is served last year it was two to a serve cause we used to order one and an extra coffee. Still good value. It had started to rain so we bought our usual six bottles of sauce and left o go to Mapleton. Warren wanted to check out a trail bike ride that he had found in one of the magazines.

GPS told us to go a different way that I would have gone but Warren says, lets follow it, it knows where we are going. As he didn't know the name of the place he had just entered Mapleton Forrest road. Oh My Goodness! thank goodness it was a 4WD as one place we had to put it into 4wd then he asks if I wanted to drive! No thanks we would have still be there as some parts we were going travelling about 10 KMH but it was interesting driving through very wooded areas and although it was dirt road and very rutted, it was not the bone shaking ruts. Thank goodness though nothing came the other way. We decided that it was a type of forrest road as no one lived there and I think we were going through National park.

We found the bike area when the trees thinned out and it was about nine kms from Mapleton but most people would come from the other way. There was some young lads there and we asked them what the track was like, they were just packing up their bikes, they reckoned it was pretty good and well signed so we will probably take the bike up one time.

From there we went through Montville, that was very crowded as it s the yuppie place to go on weekends and then came into Maleny for lunch but we couldn't find a park in the main street so we went back to Maleny Cheese and shared an Antipasto plate and a ham and cheese pie. hummmm should have just ordered one thing. We bought some yummy yoghurt to take home, i love going to that area there is just so much to see and spend money on. Great cheeses, milk, yoghurts just to name a few things.

Painting shoes

A group from Red Hats are going to a weekend away next month and the Friday night is Mama Mia night and we are going dressed for the occasion. Looking at the movie and where it is set, we have decided to go dressed in 3/4 white or light coloured pants and a floral shirt in reds and purple of course, topped off (or bottomed off in this case) by painted
shoes. Six of us met on Monday and we had a great time chatting and painting. I have a little more to do on my right one, just to add the purple bling and the 'stamens". We are also dressing in sari's for Saturday nights dinner and entertainment. The theme is Hollywood to dress as favourite actor, we are going as Bollywood actors. Should be a good weekend.

Who do you think you are?

Going through the TV guide last night, I saw this program and the person was Adam Goodes, currently the best ever indigenous Australian Rules footy player.

It was a very interesting program. His father was white and his mother had been one of the kids caught up in the Stolen generation. She had been taken from her people when she was bout five and put into a mission, then she was adopted out to a family and brought up as a white child. She had known very little about her culture or her family.

The researchers had done a very good job of finding old records and photographs. It seemed that Adam's great great great grandfather was a sea captain (also white) who started the Moota Mines on the west coast of South Australia and there is a huge statue of him in front of a University that he had donated a lot of money to start it. He had borne a son to an aboriginal woman and he (the son) had been turned over to the head of the tribe to bring up. The tribal elder had insisted that the son go to the European school and be educated and so he was brought up in both cultures.

Adam had said that while he had always known about his culture but as an outsider as they didnt know exactly what tribe they belonged to, he could now move forward and take on board his background. He was named Australian of the year because of his work to eradicate racism.

Footy is supposed to be a winter sport isn't?

We had tickets to the footy yesterday and it was an early game so we left home around 10.30am to catch the train and bus. It was coolish and so I wore a T shirt and a jacket. We got to our seats which were ten rows back from the fence and boy was it hot in the sun. I didn't want to take my jacket off as I knew that I would get sun burnt.

We put up with it (the sun and the heat) for one quarter and then moved back to the back row which was in the shade. Then i needed my jacket on to ward off the breeze, I felt sorry for the players.

After we moved we were closer to the interchange and it was interesting to see how often they were changing, although now there is a limit and i think it is 175 for the game. As the players came off, ice towels were put over their shoulders and given drinks, most were back on within five minutes.

A nasty incident happened and they needed to stretcher one of the players off, they are hoping that he has only strained his neck but they were very careful how they got him onto the stretcher and took him fro the ground. He had the ball and ducked his head as another player ran over to tackle him. As normal, he got a standing ovation when he left.

We left early as Adelaide was twelve goals in front at three quarter time, I think they went on to win by 163 points.

We bought a Jeep!

Everything was going swimmingly, we had the caravan  up for sale to make way for the new one, had a few inquiries. Had a few people want to offer a lot less than we wanted before they even looked at it. We were prepared to drop the price a bit but we didn't want to lose money on it.

Anyway two weeks ago, we got a phone call from the salesman who would be looking after our after sales service. Along with the purchase of the the new van we had also ordered the electric brakes and Anderson plug for the car. He, Sam rang to tell us that the van would be built in the next batch being started in August and was checking our requirements. He then asked what car we would be using as the tow vehicle when Warren told him, he came back and said that he didn't think the towing capacity was enough (the guy from Melbourne who sold us the van said it would be!)

It appeared that Sam was correct and we decided that we couldn't afford a new caravan and another tow vehicle so we cancelled the new van and canceled the ad selling the old van. Back to plan B! We found a Jeep near here and ended up buying it, picking it up last Tuesday. Quite low mileage and had everything on it that we needed. The reason for the Jeep itself is that Warren wanted a diesel and I wanted auto if I am going to help with towing, that cut out a lot of brands.

Before collecting it, we went to the RACQ to get insurance and Warren just couldn't help himself, he stood up and announced "We bought a Jeep!" just like in the adverts.

A Yummy hot drink

We were out today and visited the ginger factory as we were almost had to go for a drive and buy some more. On the way we dropped into the mall and Warren went to JB Hifi and I went to Kmart.

out of ginger sauce, a terrible thing in our household. That meant that we

Of course it must when we go to the ginger factory is scones and coffee, then we had lunch a couple of hurs later and another coffee. The house felt cold when we arrived home and I wanted something warm/hot to drink but had already had too much coffee.

This is what I made
one orange squeezed, one teaspoon of ginger sauce, a few mint leaves and top up with boiling/hot water, very warming and refreshing. Oranges and mint from our back yard. I bought the mugs with straws this morning.

Scarves

I have several scarves that I use summer and winter and I often take them off once I am home and leave them in strange places. Mainly because they don't have an actual "home" once I have worn them. I do have new and unused ones in a new decorative box, many that I bought in China, others were gifts that I haven't used as yet.

Last week Ii did something that I have been thinking about for awhile but just hadn't got around to it. I collected them up and tied them onto a coat hanger and hung that behind the bedroom door. Wow! it took a couple of minutes and now they are all in the same place instead of me going searching for a particular when I want to match an outfit. I am not a morning person so this is a great help!

Some of my tops, I feel are a little low but by adding a scarf takes away that space. I have heaps of necklaces that would do the same thing but I haven't found one yet that sits exactly where I want it to, even the couple of adjustable ones that I own seem to get longer or shorter over wearing time.

The red bag holds my Red Hat sash with badges, it has been missing in action for a few months (because I took it off and forgot where I put it!)

Easiest cup cakes

I watched a demo for cup cakes last week as and I needed to take something for morning tea today, I decided to make some. Trouble was, I didn't write the recipe and didn't trust my memory. Normally  I wouldn't worry but as I was taking them some, I wanted them to be reasonable if not good. I started going thru some recipes books (had to blow the dust off first!) and found an easy recipe in a Gluten free 4 Ingredients recipe book.

So so easy one cup of coconut, sugar and milk and one and a half cups of S R flour, if using ordinary flour, its only one cup, mix together and then put into patty pans, I did add some sultanas as I had bought them for the original recipe that I watched.

They only needed about 12 to 15 mins to cook and tasted good, that good that the rest were put straight into the freezer.

Corporate seats at the footy

This year we bought a set of three games to go to see Brisbane's AFL team, the Lions. Sheridan and family were offered tickets and they chose to go last week that same as us, we were going to meet up. Unfortunately two of them were sick and didn't go. Through mobile phones we caught up with them and tried to make our way to find them, not realising at the time that their tickets were in the corporate area.

We climbed the stairs to what we thought would be their area but found we were above them, another phone and it appeared we had to go ut of the grounds and in through another gate. Chris was waiting for us at the gate with the other tickets. Very swish, second tier so above the play but still close enough to see everything and then there was also the big TV screens to watch as well. Their seats were in the front row and we didnt need the cushions that we had taken for our usual seats.

It started to rain and many people left but we didn't, we just put Warren's jackets over our legs and continued to watch. Next thing a security guard was alongside of me, offering me a poncho, apparently it had been left and never collected. I didn't really need it but thanked her and took it anyway, thinking that as she was so nice to come and offer it, I shouldn't knock it back.

The rain lasted for about twenty minutes and there was thunder as well, hail was expected but didn't eventuate thank goodness. The Suns were soundly beaten on the day, we had been hoping that they would win and Ablett was injured so we didn't see him play, maybe next year as he is out for the rest of the year.

One more game of our three which will be next week.

Alterations

I was in a store a couple of weeks ago and picked up a couple of long sleeved tops in a sale. With the cooler weather, long sleeved tops was something that I did seem to be slacking in my wardrobe,(I feel that I cant wear the same things all the time like at home!)

Washed them and hung on hangers ready to wear. I got a call to fill in for some-one who was sick at work which meant working a five day week again. On one of those days, I grabbed one of the new tops and pulled it on. Pulled was the correct word as the sleeves were very tight and I knew that it would have been very uncomfortable to wear it all day.
ready to cut

I was having a whinge on the way to work and daughter says why not put a panel in it? I thought about it and decided that I would have a go at doing that as I couldnt wear it as it was. That meant a trip to Spotlight to buy something similar or a contrast. Ended up with black, it had very long cuffs as well. I cut them off, added a piece in the side just above as the the rest of the top is plenty big enough.
This is the end result with a side panel and cuff in black. I am wearing it today but after the weather on Friday, not sure that I will get much wear out of it for work as the cold seems to have gone. A five dollar top transformed into a wearable piece and it still cost under $10, cheaper than buying at an op shop these days.
