Newtown to Greenhead

Out of Newtown and through someones yard, up and through farmer browns paddocks again. Yay, first sight of the wall. Fourteen kilometres to the first Roman fort and a tea house. I really wanted to rest for at least an hour but after 20 minutes or so we got going as we felt that our muscles would tighten if we stayed any longer.
I did feel very refreshed after that break but realised any longer would be foolish.
The fort, we didnt go ibto it. There was another 4kilometres to go to our hotel. At the 17 km mark we saw a bus stop. And a sign saying 2 miles, yikes another 3.2 kilometres. The bys would be different and it was only a twenty minute wait. Yep, the bus won out although Warren kept walking and got to hotel about ten  inutes after us. He said there were a lot of stiles to go over.
Our hotel.

Newtown

Quite a few newer looking houses here, there was a phone box (regulation grey not red) and a village hall and houses.
We were instructed to go to the phone box and then 50 metres to the house. We rang as it was a bit confusing, between Newtown and Irthington. The two places sort of join. We had to book a table at The Sally which is a pub in Irthington.

When we walked into the garden our host came out to met us and asked if we wanted coffee or tea in the garden. Yes, please!
Later at dinner time, we were driven to the Sally about four kilometres for dinner. Two meals, two drinks and a dessert was £38.
This was our room, we had an Ensuite.
View from our window, about seven in the morning.

Dinner at Greenhead pub

Oh my lordy, was dinner ever so good tonight. We are booked into this pub and grabbed a table for dinner. No shops, no cafes not much except a pub. Rooms are good size, king size and there is also a sofa that is done as a bed.

Quite a big menu, I chose the chicken snitzel with mushrooms in a creamy sauce, vegetables and mash. My meal is above.

Warren had the Gammon (ham steak) except it was a large hunk of ham. He gave me a taste, it was melt in the mouth.
The two meals, two large cokes and lunch for tomorrow cost £33. We are only ordering one lunch between us and finding it is plenty. There is usually two bread rolls with ham and cheese, pkt chips and some sort of biscuit bar, two pieces of fruit and a bottle of water.

Carlisle to Newtown

Left the guest house at 8.15 after a breakfast of egg, sausage, mushrooms, potato scone bacon and black pudding, certainly know how to do breakfast. Cereals, fruit, juice and toast are on hand plus coffee or tea.

Walked through a great park, talked to a few people who were walking their dogs
Everything is so green, noone can beleive the weather, how good it is at the moment. Lots of trees and flowers in bloom.
Coming into a small village about 11am, thinking it would be nice for a stop and a coffee. A pub on the corner, great, some one drove past and called out that it didnt open til 12 noon.  We kept going, saw a sign for Eden tea rooms Warren rang to see if they were open and where they were. Two miles in the opposite direction. Turned up the walking path and 100 metres along was a sign saying refreshments. A farm had a small shelter with fridges and hot water. It was a honesty thing, cold drinks, ice creams etc etc.even a loo out the back.
Further along the track there were two more honesty boxes with snacks and water.
Lot of walking in farmer browns paddocks today. 15.3 kms

It was quite warm and I had to take my jacket off and I did get a little sunburntt

Down town Carlisle

We skipped a little of the walk yesterday and opted to take the shorter route into Carlisle rather than go around the river. We were looking for lunch, a sit down and a toilet not necessary in that order. Walked 15.8 kms

Came past a few eating places but no where to sit so continued on the Sainsburys and acheived al, three thank goodness. Toilets are very few and far between.

Continued walking to our accommodation and later on with a reccomdation we went to an Italian place for dinner. It was very good and then we wandered down town.

Carlisle

Quite a distance between Port Carlisle and Carlisle. Supposed to be the same distance for these two days but our accommodation was actually 2 mile short of Burgh on Sands and so yesterdays hike was 10.8kmns and today we clocked up 15.8kms.
We were driven in to Burgh on Sands for dinner at the pub last night. Warren had a chicken curry with half rice and half chips. I had mushroom soup and some fried brie, then we shared a chocolate pudding, £28 altogether.

Lots of flowers and trees in blossom.
Today as well as the extra distance we had to contend with Steps! The first lot of about 35 were quite high and I adopted the dot and carry, too high to go up one pace at a time.
This photo is on the top of the ridge after we had climbed up the steps.
Beatiful and impressive buildings that seem to crop up around corners and out of the blue.

Port Carlisle

This was our first stop, one mile in. A guy has a signpost opposite his house and for a donation he will put up walkers hometown and the distance, then take a photo.
We had walked on the road til almost this part and then it was a small pathway. A variety of tracks from roads to paths to walking through or alongside of paddocks put down to crops, through some fields amonst the sheep and cows (and poop).

Track is well signposted with small wooden signs saying Hadrians wall walk and acorns. Near the end of our walk we did met two other walkers and one guy overtook us, he did stop to chat, well we talked to him but we figured he was a hiker and probably doing it in four days.

Taken from our bedroom window, we are staying at a farm house just off the road. Lady of the house drove us the 2 mile into next town for dinner at the local pub, she also picked us up again. They have 180 milking cows. It was fun to see them bought up for milking.
Great sunny day.
Still a little way to go in above photo but that is the hamlet of our accommodation. wh.
